The album, in my opinion, is way too long, has an uninteresting story, corny lyrics, and way too many ballads. Ballads are fine, but when the album consists of mostly ballads, and those ballads are just cringey, too, then there's a problem. Also, Mangini's drum sound is fake and sounds absolutely atrocious.

It's already been said on this question but “The Astonishing” is my least favorite Dream Theater album and probably the worst. There is maybe a handful of decent songs on it, the rest is all filler trying to fill in the spaces of an overblown conc.
